Arc Flash Safety in 2018 (Part 1)

Change happens all around us whether we like it or not. Some of the changes that affect us professionally will cause us to have to make a choice whether or not to grow. In some instances, growth is a smart choice, backed by logic and movement amongst your peers. We see this a lot in many competitive markets, and sometimes even taken in a negative light as “a sign of the times.”
However, we’re not going to discuss a slow or drifting change today. The changes we will be discussing come straight from the newest version of NFPA 70E and are vital for anyone working in an electrical trade. We take safety very seriously here at SI Testing, and not just because it helps us to perform efficiently while on the job. We feel that it’s just as important to be part of the standard for excellence in our industry, as it is to return home to our families safely every night.
We can all easily agree that electrical safety is important, but how often do we make the personal changes in our lives and behaviors to reflect leadership in this area.
I want to spend a couple weeks highlighting the 2018 changes in the NFPA 70E Standard.
One of the changes will be found in Article 110.1(H) - Risk Assessment Procedure.
This section outlines how to assess an employee or contractor’s exposure to an electrical hazard, how human error comes into play, and focuses on following a hierarchy of risk control methods to eliminate or reduce risk.
Make sure you watch the NFPA video on this topic and make efforts to begin implementing these changes before any job or task exposes you to an electrical hazard.
